General Technical Description
The intermediate gears were manufactured by J Stone & Co. of Deptford under licence from Maybach, and each bogie comprise the following assemblies:
a) Three-piece gearcase
b) Input shaft with gear and bearings
c) Output shaft with gears and bearings
d) Oil Pump unit
As supplied, the Intermediate Gear was additionally fitted with an oil cooler, these were removed during BR service.
The input and output shafts are carried in rolling element bearings, the shaft radial loads are taken on roller bearings, the axial (thrust) loads are taken with a deep grooved ball bearing.
The gears are helical cut form.
The output shaft has the oil pump driving gear, the oil pump providing an oil spray to the gears and bearings.
The oil pump delivers oil in both directions of rotation by means of automatic changeover valves.
The driving flanges are a press fit onto the shaft tapers.
What work needs to be done?
A full overhaul would require:
- A strip down to check bearings and gears are in a serviceable condition.
- Input and output shaft end floats need to be checked and adjusted within tolerances.
- Oil pump to be overhauled, flow tested and the operation of the changeover valves checked.
What’s likely to be in need of repair?
- Bogie frame mountings may need to be repaired from fretting and wear.
